Steve has been a public radio news reporter in the Cincinnati area for three decades. He began with WGUC, then WVXU, and in 2005, came to WNKU. Steve covers breaking news, writes WNKU’s local afternoon newscasts and produces feature-length interviews and other feature stories that are heard each weekday. Steve also serves as WNKU’s News Assignment Editor. Steve has written and produced news stories and features for National Public Radio, the worldwide broadcasts of Voice of America, Ohio Public Radio, and Monitor Radio.

Cincinnati Pops Sign goes to American Sign Museum

The brightly lit "Pops" sign that hung above and behind the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra for decades is now retired and has been moved to the American Sign Museum in the city's Camp Washington neighborhood. Orchestra spokeswoman Meghan Berneking talked about the sign and its history with WNKU's Steve Hirschberg.

Norwood Planetarium Focuses on Venus Transit

The Drake Planetarium and Science Center at Norwood High School and Middle School is raising its public profile with a day devoted to a rare cosmic event that happens tomorrow. The event is called the Transit of Venus. WNKU's Steve Hirschberg talked about the Venetian Transit with Pam Bowers, the Executive Director of the Planetarium and Science Center.

Fire Forces School Evacuation in Hebron

HEBRON — A fire forced children and teachers at the Prodigy School in Hebron to evacuate Friday morning.

The fire was reported just before noon at the school at 2050 Barbara Drive in Hebron. Firefighters said flames were coming from a stove in the kitchen.

Firefighters from Hebron and Burlington responded to the school, Boone County dispatchers said. The fire was out within minutes. No injuries were reported.

The school and daycare center takes children six weeks to 12 years old.

Official KY Historian Talks About Hatfield-McCoy Feud

The world-famous feud between the Hatfields and the McCoys is the subject of a mini-series that ran this week on The History Channel. To find out more about the long-ago animosity between the two families, WNKU's Steve Hirschberg talked with Dr. James Klotter, the state of Kentucky's official historian. Klotter says most of the McCoys lived in Pike County, Kentucky; and the Hatfields lived just across the state line in West Virginia.

Woman Found Dead at Florence Facility

The Kentucky Enquirer  is reporting: Authorities have determined the death of a Fort Mitchell woman at a Florence distribution facility was a homicide. Workers arriving at ThermoFisher Scientific about 7:20 a.m. on Tuesday reported that a woman there had been assaulted. Deputies arrived and found 42 year old Michelle Mockbee dead inside the office area of the facility. Authorities are still investigating the cause of death.

Homerama to be in Clermont County for First Time

Beshear Signs Disaster Relief and Recovery Legislation

This spring’s devastating storms and tornadoes thrashed Kentucky communities, marking the 11th federally declared disaster in the state since 2008. The Kentucky Press News Service says, to support ongoing recovery efforts, Governor Steve Beshear Friday ceremonially signed legislation to help Kentuckians when they are victims of natural disasters.
