John Patrick

Host / Music Director

I was born and raised in Peru, Indiana, along with musician Cole Porter and basketball player Kyle Macy, but not at the same time. They were a bit older. Cole’s niece was in love with me in the 1st grade. Little did I know, she was one of the heirs to his publishing fortune, or I might have shown more interest. Hind sight is 20/20, especially in the 1st grade.

I didn’t know what I wanted to do after high school and today I’m still not sure. I started in radio in Peru, right out of high school in 1983. I spent most of the late '80s and early '90s in the world’s greatest college town, Bloomington, Indiana, which has an incredible local music scene. I was Music Director at WTTS during this time, back when they were a great new Triple A station.

I’ve done just about every job in radio, even Sales and Management, which are ok, but being able to play great music every day is best. I think it’s safe to say that no one has had more luck or more fun than me.

There’s always more than one great song on a album!

Thanks for listening to WNKU.

Madi Diaz Visits WNKU

WNKU has had a difficult time getting enough of this 25-year-old Nashville-based musician. Don't let her youth fool you, she's hiding a powerful and soulful voice in her small frame. Madi was kind enough to pay WNKU a visit just before she headed over to the Bunbury Music Festival. She also shared some laughs with John Patrick and Bob the engineer.

Irish Lovin' from The Elders

Many laughs were shared when The Elders paid WNKU's John Patrick, a visit last week. The group shared several stories about their annual returns to front-man Ian Byrne's home in Wicklow, Ireland to perform. Byrne and his American counterparts make up the group, The Elders, who greatly enjoy the challenge of describing their unique sound. The Elders have achieved a very unique sound, and an equally difficult task  is describing exactly what it is that they play.

Scott Miller at WNKU

Scott Miller was kind enough to stop by WNKU's studio to play a few tunes. Though he left behind the rest of the Commonwealth, he managed to bring along a past member of the Commonwealth, Rayna Gellert. Miller and Gellert met at West Virginia's Mountain Stage last year, and have been friends and performing buddies ever since. Together they have a brand new EP entitled, "CoDEPENDENTS". It's a five-song collection of Miller's story-telling songwriting, polished with the talented musical abilities of Rayna Gellert.
