I was born and raised in very interesting town, Peru, Indiana along with
musician Cole Porter and basketball player Kyle Macy, but not at the same time they
were a bit older. Cole’s niece was in love with me in the 1st grade.
Little did I know, she was one of the heirs to his fortune, or I might have
shown more interest. Hind sight is 20/20 especially in the 1st grade. I didn’t know
what I wanted to do after high school and today I’m still not sure, I started in radio in
Peru right out of high school in 1983. I spent most of the late 80’s and early 90’s in the
world’s greatest college town, Bloomington, Indiana, which has an incredible local music
scene, a handful of national acts and musicians call it home. I’ve done just about every
job in radio, even Sales and Management, which are ok, but being able to play great
music every day is best. I think it’s safe to say that no one has had more luck
or more fun than me, the fun meter is always cranked. If I had an influence it was
probably AM 89 WLS in Chicago, if you lived in the upper midwest in the 70’s, then
you know that WLS was one of the great stations of all-time, with Larry Lujack, Fred
Winston, John Records Landecker, and later on, Steve and Gary, and on and on…. just
great radio. Ratings wars, budget cuts, and de-regulation have killed the great stations
like WLS. Thank god for public radio! There’s always more than one great song on a
album! Thanks for listening to WNKU.
