NKU Bucks for Brains Faculty In 1997 the Kentucky legislature approved a bold plan to reform the state’s system of higher education. The goal was to develop a “seamless, integrated system of postsecondary education strategically planned and adequately funded to enhance economic development and quality of life.” To that end, the state created a strategic investment in university research and faculty endowment designed to create new jobs, new dollars and new opportunities for Kentucky citizens.
The Regional University Excellence Trust Fund, commonly known as “Bucks for Brains,” matches state funds with private donations to pay for endowed professorships and to support research efforts at state universities, effectively doubling the investment in defined areas key to the state. In 1998 Kentucky legislators invested $110 million in general fund appropriations to support Bucks for Brains at the state's research and regional universities. They reinforced that commitment with an additional $120 million in 2000 and another $120 million in 2003.
This funding has allowed Northern Kentucky University to create many endowed professorships. In return, these preeminent faculty are enhancing the education of NKU students and drawing attention to the university with innovative research and programs, which will lead to a better quality of education for students and benefit the community in which it serves.
Bucks for Brains offers tremendous benefits to the Commonwealth. Besides helping attract some of the top scholars and scientists in the country, Bucks for Brains also helps boost the state economy, improves the lives of Kentucky citizens and enhances the education of its students. NKU Bucks for Brains faculty and students at both the undergraduate and graduate level work with Bucks for Brains scholars to help prepare them to become the state's next leaders.
